Just the Outlander chapter

We start with Claire still at the inn. Now she’s cradling some milk, as she recovers from the hit to the stomach she received. It’s a blow that leaves her in shock, both physically and mentally.

Claire admits that she slipped up when talking to Black Jack Randall. Seeing a man who was so much like her husband, she assumed he had the same personality. She partially let her guard slip, talking to him in the way that she would have to Frank.

For me, this is an important chapter to also give us a sense of Frank’s personality as well as Black Jack Randall’s. While Frank is certainly a man of his time, he’s also respectful. He can be civil when needed and Claire does feel safe with him. It’s no wonder she slips up as she looks at someone who could almost be his double.

And yet, Black Jack Randall is nothing like Frank. He’s mean and sadistic. Claire sees a look on BJR’s face that she could never unsee but also never imagine on Frank’s face. She knows that they are not the same person, and this is a lesson to Claire to watch her back around BJR.

When Dougal takes Claire away, he decides to take her to a saint’s spring. Claire tells us about why the people would travel to these springs but notes that Dougal doesn’t seem to share that sort of superstition. However, it’s later clear that he shares some of them. He believes that people who drink from this particular spring can’t lie without being burned with Hell’s fire.

Because of this, he’s sure that Claire is telling the truth. While he tells the story about Jamie, I do get a sense that it’s more to give the water time to burn Claire. He wants to trip her up in lies instead of revealing everything about Jamie—although it could also be to tell his story and explain everything that he saw at Fort William. He has a sense about Black Jack Randall and he doesn’t like him.

In the end, Dougal knows that there’s only one way to save Claire from BJR, and that’s for her to marry a Scot. Jamie is the top choice.

I do find it interesting that Dougal even wants to save Claire, but this comes back to her understanding why Dougal is raising money. The last thing he’d want is for her to tell BJR what he’s doing through torture. And now he knows she’s not a spy for the English or the French, he needs to keep her safe. Jamie is the better choice, but that’s because of something we learn later. More on that in the foreshadowing section.

Naturally, Claire doesn’t want to marry Jamie. She doesn’t want to marry anyone. She wants to find her way home. But that’s not possible, and we end the chapter knowing that the marriage will go ahead.
