Just the Outlander chapter

This is a relatively short chapter, especially compared to more recent ones. It takes just 20 minutes or so to read—even when you’re looking for the details.

Claire thinks about her time with the men so far. As she lays in a room alone, she realizes that there was a certain comfort of the men she’s been traveling with. Now she’s got a private room, she struggles with loneliness. It’s something I think we can all empathize with at times. We don’t realize how much we appreciate the comfort of those around us until that comfort isn’t there.

For me, this chapter focused on how Claire’s feelings for the men have grown. She doesn’t trust them, and she feels like an outsider, but they do still give her comfort. It holds promise of friendships or at least understandings to come. I’ll touch more on that in the foreshadowing element.

She isn’t alone for long. She hears someone outside and goes out to investigate. Of course, that leads to tripping over Jamie. It’s an amusing scene, especially as both of them go from annoyance back to friendliness. And you just have to love Jamie’s discomfort at the idea of sleeping in a room with Claire alone. There’s no way he’d want to ruin her reputation, and not because of his feelings for her. I think he’d do the same for any girl or woman.

The biggest part for me is Claire heading off to meet the garrison commander. She should know who she is going to meet. After all, Frank made it very clear that Black Jack Randall was in charge of Fort William at some point. It strikes me odd that she thinks Fort William will be a place of safety. Clearly, she wasn’t really listening to the stories being told to her by either Frank or Jamie in previous chapters.

Claire is so focused on getting home that she doesn’t fully consider her own safety. She doesn’t fully expect the barriers standing in her way. For me, this makes Claire’s personality stand out all the more. Maybe it is her stubbornness, but I also think it shows her tunnel vision at times. We all get like that now and then, and this is the first time I’m truly appreciating the signs of Claire’s tunnel vision that she can often get.

Of course, it all ends in disaster. The minute she meets Randall, she knows there’s trouble. Yet, she tries to keep an air of sophistication about her. She tries to keep her lie working for her. What she doesn’t realize is that Randall is like a dog with a bone when it comes to something that doesn’t sit right with him, and he does his research.
