Claire met the garrison commander in Outlander Book 1, Chapter 12

When it comes to book to show changes, I think Outlander Book 1, Chapter 12 saw the most change. The show brought us extra characters, some of which would never been seen again. However, that didn’t take away from the story.

In a 20-minute (according to Audible) chapter, the book delves into Claire’s thoughts about the men that she’s been around for the last few days and weeks. It’s a chance to lament, while also getting ready for her escape. After all, she knows she’s heading to Fort William, and that hopefully means that she can get to Craigh na Dun.

Of course, as we’ve come to expect up to this point in the books, Claire’s plans aren’t always going to play out the way she hopes. While she can control her part in it, she can’t control the actions of others. Nor can she predict the personality of certain people she meets.

At the same time, Jamie continues to be a man unlike the others. He’s focused on Claire’s safety, suggesting there’s far more to his feelings than meets the eye.

It’s time for our breakdown of the chapter. In the final section, I’ll explain why the changes for the show worked and why they became important for a later point in the show.
