Outlander Book Club: Book 1, Chapter 10 breakdown
Transforming the chapter into the Outlander TV series
This chapter is heavily used in the chapter. For the most part, it’s exactly the same. Claire tries to escape, she comes across Jamie in the stables, and he has to figure out how to get around the oath. She also has to help Geordie in death.
However, there are some big changes to the details.
I do get a sense that Claire is a little smarter in the show at this point. In the books, she’s forgotten about her shadows keeping an eye on her. This is something that is focused on in the show, mostly because we get to know her shadows, Rupert and Angus, a little more. We see Claire knock Angus out with the drugged Port because he just can’t say no to alcohol.
Then there are the moments at the Gathering. Murtagh is there to explain the situation when it comes to Jamie, Colum, and Dougal. We see the threat and feel the suspense. Claire isn’t just guessing but is being told the risks that she’s put Jamie in, making her feel all the more guiltier than she already does.
This scene in the show further develops Murtagh’s character. We get to see him as someone looking out for Jamie. He wants to keep his godson safe, even if we don’t exactly understand why at this point. Murtagh hasn’t even been mentioned since getting to Castle Leoch in the book.
Finally, I’ll touch on the Highland Games. There’s much more to this in the books, focusing on games after the boar hunt. However, the show had to reduce this section down. There was no need to mention other games. After all, the important one involved Geordie’s death, giving Dougal a chance to see that Claire has seen far more brutality than most high-born women would.
