Taking a deep look at Outlander Book 1, Chapter 3
We’re heading into the third chapter of Outlander Book 1. It’s a chance to see just how much this chapter was transformed for the show.
In fact, this is the first chapter up to this point that was used heavily for the series, and it makes sense. It’s a great way to introduce the Highlander who would eventually (sort of) become Claire’s friends. I have always felt more of a bond develop on the show than in the books, except, of course, with Jamie Fraser.
Of course, we don’t get to know him as Jamie Fraser at first. He’s just called Jamie. And we only get to know the others as Dougal, Murtagh, and Rupert. No Angus in the books—well, not yet.
Let’s deep dive into the chapter of the book. As the other chapters in our Outlander Book Club, I’m separating this into three seasons.
For those who are wondering how long it would take to read the chapter, Audible says one hour and seven minutes. I think it took about that amount of time. This is one of my favorite chapters of the book and one that I remember the most vividly at this point in the story.
