During the Outlander Season 5 finale, Claire mentioned that she’d lost two husbands. This is something that some fans have questioned, wondering whether it was a continuity error or slip up by the writers. However, Claire has definitely felt the loss of two husbands, even if only one is dead.
It all goes back to the way Claire felt during the third season. When in her own present time, Claire had to leave the past behind. She needed to move on without Jamie in her life, believing that he had died on the battlefield at Culloden.
We got a sense of that grief. Claire was detached. She felt angry and depressed, mourning the loss of what could have been and trying to go through life with Frank. Things weren’t perfect for Claire and Frank, partially because Claire hadn’t had time to grieve but also because she didn’t fully want to move on from her soul mate.
Jamie was dead to Claire during Outlander Season 3
One husband Claire meant was definitely Frank. It’s easy to see how she would mean him considering he was killed in a car accident during the third season.
The other husband was Jamie. Sure, he’s alive with her now, but when she was in the 20th century for 20 years, he was dead to her. Even if he didn’t die at Culloden like she believed he did, he would have been dead for more than 150 years.
Claire had mourned Jamie just like she had mourned Frank. She had said goodbye to him, even by going to the Fraser headstone at Culloden in 1968 to tell him about Brianna and tell him that she’d hated him for a long time for what he’d done—it was all part of the grief.
So yes, Claire did lose two husbands. One of those husbands she’d gained back through time travel, but she had survived being widowed twice.
