A ranking of all seasons of Outlander so far

Outlander is one of STARZ most successful shows ever. When only looking at shows still with new seasons confirmed, it’s the most successful.

There’s still much more to come. At the time of writing this, we’re five seasons in and the story just continues to grow. It’s based on some of the best material going, but the writers have managed to put their own mark to it, adapting the books for the current expectations of TV and fiction in general.

Sure, there are storylines fans question. There are diversions from the book storyline or invention for the TV show that has some book-first fans scratching their heads. It really is best to keep the show and books separate.

That’s what I’m doing as I rank the Outlander seasons from worst to best. I won’t touch on how the books were adapted. Instead, it’s all about the contained storylines for the season.

As more seasons of the show are added, I’ll update this list.

Outlander Season 2

The second half of the season is strong and “Faith” certainly is an episode worth watching for Caitriona Balfe’s acting skills, but overall, the season doesn’t interest me all that much. I do think it’s a flaw in putting the 1948 episode as the premiere. It didn’t confuse me, but it made it clear that everything Claire and Jamie were fighting for was pointless.

The France part of the story started to drag because I knew that it wouldn’t end with any success. Then the part leading up to Culloden felt flat knowing that Claire and Jamie wouldn’t change history. However, the second half was strong to see the battles play out. It was also important to say goodbye to those Scottish characters we’d come to know and love.
