12. Episode 2: The reaction to Murtagh’s involvement
Jamie wasn’t happy about the actions of the Regulators at Hillsborough. He didn’t agree with the tar and feathers. Riots are one thing. Not paying taxes is understandable. But to harm people is just wrong. Sure, I’m looking at this with a 21st-century view, but it’s clear that the 18th-century Jamie doesn’t agree either.
However, it’s the reaction when he learns Murtagh sanctioned it that gets me every time. Jamie thought that Murtagh wouldn’t go that far. It crossed a line, and Jamie realizes that his godfather isn’t the man from Culloden anymore.
Because we don’t get to see what happened in the years that Murtagh was on the Colonies, it’s hard to imagine Murtagh changing so much. However, when you really think about it, it makes sense. But Jamie’s reaction was our reaction.
11. Episode 1: The Gathering and the kilt
We’d waited a long time for Jamie to put his kilt back on. The Outlander Season 5 premiere gave us that moment. He does it to give Governor Tryon the Scot that the man seems to want. And this is after turning to Claire for advice and help with the situation, showing their strength as a couple.
It’s more than just the kilt, though. This moment brings us to the Gathering, seeing Jamie call the men to arms. He starts in general, hoping that Roger will step forward first. When Roger doesn’t, we see Jamie change tactics. He wants his son-in-law by his side, and will protect Roger by making him a captain of the militia.
