The MacKenzies tried to go through the stones but returned ‘home.’ How will they explain their lack of movement on Outlander Season 6?

Throughout Outlander Season 5, Episode 11, Brianna and Roger said goodbye to their family and friends. Their story was that they were heading to Boston where Roger got a teaching position at a university. It wasn’t too far from the truth, and more just a different time period.

But now they’re back. The MacKenzies realized that home is on Fraser’s Ridge, and it looks like they’re not heading to the future any time soon. The problem is they can’t just say “we couldn’t time travel” to people.

They’ll need to think of some sort of story. Why did they decide not to head to Boston after just a few weeks of travel? Why would they decide to return when Roger clearly didn’t even start the job?

The easiest explanation is that they just decided that they couldn’t leave. The further away they got, the more they wanted to remain with their family. Sure, there may be some judgment from people—those who chose to leave their family behind in Britain to move to the Colonies, but does that really matter?

Plus, the story is that they came from Boston anyway, so it’s not like they wouldn’t know what life was like there. They moved to North Carolina to be with family. It makes sense that, in the end, a job offer isn’t enough for them to move away from everyone they know.

They could also say that they got word that Claire had been abducted. Young Ian could vouch for that story. This would then give them a strong reason to return and even stay, believing that Claire needs Bree, Roger, and Jemmy to heal.

The show will probably gloss over this part of the story. There’s no need to cover it because, really, we don’t need to know. It’s just one of those little things that I consider as someone who moves a lot.
