Episodes 5 to 8

The middle block of episodes saw some of the strongest of the season. They were the episodes I was most excited about, getting a chance to see the events of the Battle of Alamance and how they would be portrayed. Let’s get straight into the episode grades for these Outlander Season 5 episodes.

. Outlander. S5E5. Perpetual Adoration. C+

Episode 5: Perpetual Adoration

The flashbacks for Claire were strong moments. I’ve always wanted to see more of that 20-year separation, something I don’t think was properly explored in the show. But this is what the books are for. However, using the flashback and giving it a reason to be there was enjoyable.

Knox’s story came to the only conclusion it could. He had to die at Jamie’s hand to protect Jamie. No, I don’t think it made him a murderer. Well, okay, technically it did, but I don’t think anything less of him. Jamie protected his whole family.

However, the episode was predictable. It didn’t stand out too much in the way others did. This is one of those episodes that likely takes more viewings to appreciate more.

C. . Outlander. S5E6. Better to Marry Than Burn

Episode 6: Better to Marry Than Burn

This is my least favorite episode of the entire season. From seeing the promo to the end of the episode, it just felt flat. Once again, Claire and Jamie are arguing—and Claire wasn’t willing to just understand Jamie’s point of view with the rings.

The scene in the barn was awkward. All the scenes were, but I’m sure you know which one I’m talking about. The passion just didn’t feel real.

The thing that gives this episode a passing grade is that scene with Jocasta and Murtagh at the end. He pours her heart out to her and we see the flashbacks as to why she can’t possibly marry him. It’s romantic and heartbreaking at the same time.

S5E7. The Ballad of Roger Mac. A. . Outlander

Episode 7: The Ballad of Roger Mac

There is something special about this episode. From start to finish, I was exciting. I held my breath without realizing and I tensed up throughout the battle. Deep down, I knew what was coming but I still felt it hard. I cried when Murtagh died and the way Jamie reacted.

Something that certainly made this a favorite episode was the surprise of Graham McTavish playing Buck MacKenzie. it was something I’d never considered or expected, and I’m so glad the show was able to keep this a surprise. Sometimes, spoilers are fine. Other times, they do ruin the excitement.

Yes, this is certainly an episode to watch again and again. I think it will always hold up.

A+. . Outlander. S5E8. Famous Last Words

Episode 8: Famous Last Words

We had the opportunity of a lot of flashbacks throughout Outlander Season 5. This was another episode that started with one, giving us Roger and Brianna in 1960s Oxford.

However, it was the episode as a whole that made me give this an A+. I was hooked throughout. The use of the silent movie was a risk but one that, for me, paid off well. It became grating in a way that could only make you wonder just how Roger felt deep down.

Of course, there was Young Ian’s return early. This was a perfect addition, allowing the two men to grief but start their healing process together. I hope it leads to more in future seasons.
