When fans saw the title of the Outlander Season 5 finale was “Never My Love,” there was some debate about where it came from. It turned out the title was far more important than it would initially seem.
All Outlander titles fit to the episode in some way. In some cases, they’re connected to a song used in the episode. That was certainly the case during this episode, but it also connected to both Claire and Jamie.
The song “Never My Love” was released in 1967 by a group called Association. Already, there are connections. The song was used throughout the fantasy world that Claire created to disassociate herself from the real events. It was her ability to survive.
She’d created a world with Jamie in the 1960s. Imagining a safer and happier time, although elements of the past kept blending in.
The lyrics to the song are important. They talk of whether there will be a time of growing tired of someone they love, whether the heart will lose its desire, and whether there’s anything that can make that love end. “Never my love” is always the response.
It connects to Claire’s feelings of being tainted and unworthy. Will Jamie stop loving Claire after everything she’s been through? “Never my love,” we know Jamie would respond. Will Claire’s inability to take a life out of revenge stop him loving her? Absolutely not! He will kill for her.
Jamie has asked Claire to spend their entire lives together. That isn’t going to change.
And nor will Claire’s feelings for Jamie. Nothing will stop them both from loving each other until the end of their days (and the end of time).
