Brianna and Roger had many goodbyes on Outlander Season 5, Episode 11. There was one thing that made Lizzie’s the saddest of all.

After deciding they were going back to the future, Brianna and Roger had to say their goodbyes. They had a story planned out, and it meant some tearful moments on Outlander Season 5, Episode 11. The saddest was definitely Lizzie’s goodbye.

There was one reason this goodbye became the most heartbreaking of all. It came out of nowhere for Lizzie. There was no reason for Lizzie to think that she wouldn’t have been going to Boston with Brianna and Roger.

Lizzie had been with Bree since Scotland. When Brianna was securing passage for the Colonies, Lizzie’s father asked for Lizzie to become Bree’s indentured servant. It would set the motion for a bond between the two women that will never change.

Since becoming a servant to Brianna (and I’m sure she’s now a maid out of choice and not an indentured servant), Lizzie has always been by Bree’s side. She’s never left, always being there as a kind ear or as someone to trust with Jemmy. They’ve created a relationship of trust and love.

Lizzie was pretty settled with the idea of being a maid to Bree for the rest of her days. It’s clear that she loves her job, she loves her mistress, and she will do anything for those around her. Say what you want about her reaction when the bison turned up, but she did put herself between the bison and Jemmy to protect him. She has nothing but love for the little boy.

And so, there was no reason for Lizzie to even think she wasn’t going with Brianna. Even if it wasn’t immediately, she was sure that she would join Bree and Roger in Boston, continuing her position with the family.

Imagine the shock when she realized Bree didn’t want her in Boston. There would have been hurt and sadness, as well as that feeling of being unwanted. Bree tried to smooth things over—had Bree actually been going to the 18th century Boston, she would have taken Lizzie—but it was clear that Lizzie felt discarded. That made this who goodbye even harder.

Of course, Lizzie can’t be told the truth. This is a woman I don’t think would be able to handle the knowledge of the truth. She’d get scared and possibly tell someone else who could cause harm to the Frasers and MacKenzies. However, that still doesn’t stop this goodbye from being the saddest of all on Outlander Season 5, Episode 11.
