Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 saw Roger step up to save Jamie Fraser. Here are my three favorite Roger moments from the whole episode.

Roger Mac certainly had a rough episode on Outlander Season 5, Episode 8. All that seems to be in the past (for now), as Roger had to step up to save Jamie’s life on Episode 9.

Ignoring the fact that it seems Roger is mentally fine now (PTSD is always there, but there are good and bad days so it’s plausible) and his voice seems to have completely healed, Roger had a major episode. He needed to use his future knowledge in the past to save the life of his father-in-law. He certainly wasn’t going to just let Jamie die.

There were some excellent moments throughout the episode. Here are my three favorite moments from Outlander Season 5, Episode 9.

3. Unsure if he can kill Bonnet

Stephen Bonnet is a threat to the entire family. He could make it look like Jemmy is his; that Brianna had willingly slept with him. It’s a problem for all, and Jamie has one dying request. He needs Roger to kill Bonnet if the time comes.

Yet, Roger admits that he’s not sure if he can do this. He’s a minister’s son. Sure, his biological dad was a World War II fighter pilot, but that’s not the way Roger was raised. He was raised by his uncle, a Presbyterian minister. It’s no wonder he is more of a pacifist.

I love that we have this conversation. It continues to show Roger’s “weaker” side. It shows his softness and he’s completely honest about himself. Some people just can’t kill others no matter what.

Most importantly, though, Roger says he doesn’t “think” he could kill Bonnet. He doesn’t know. If the time comes, would he be able to go through with it?

2. Refusing to let Jamie die in the woods

Roger isn’t going to let his father-in-law die. After sucking the venom out and trying to save Jamie’s life, he knows that he needs to get Jamie back to the house. So he creates a makeshift bed and drags Jamie home.

It’s a long walk. At one point in the episode, Young Ian and Fergus mention that they were on the boundary to Roger and Bree’s land. So, there are a good few thousand acres between the Big House and Roger and Jamie. Yet, Roger isn’t going to just give up and do nothing.

When he hears Young Ian and Fergus looking for them, he makes sure he can be heard. His voice is raw from the work dragging Jamie through the woods, so he finds a way to make sound. When he needs to, Roger can think on his feet in a good way.

1. Being there for when Jamie woke

Outlander Season 5, Episode 9 is all about Jamie and Roger’s bond. The time in the woods strengthens is and that shows by the end of the episode. When Claire is needed to check on Marsali, who had just given birth, and Brianna is seeing her new niece, Roger is the one that remains by Jamie’s side.

Roger wants to make sure he’s there for Jamie when Jamie wakes. It’s not just to make sure Jamie does wake. He has the chance to make a joke about Jamie surviving. We see this bond will be strong moving forward. Sure, the two men are from different times but they’ve found new respect for each other.
