Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 ratings throwback: Witch trials sees a tick up
Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 aired on this day in history. More viewers tuned in as the witch trials got underway and Claire revealed her secret.
During Outlander Season 1, Episode 11, Claire faced trial for being a witch, and she wasn’t alone. As the episode aired on this day in history, this is a chance for us to look back at the events.
The previous episode set up the events for this one. “By the Pricking of the Thumbs” gave us a look at why Claire would be viewed as a witch; why some in the village would hate her. However, this episode was far more important than just one about a witch trial. It gave us some answers about Geillis Duncan and was a chance for Claire to tell Jamie her secret.
Of course, knowing what was coming, viewers tuned in. According to TV Series Finale, the live audience ticked up by 27% and the demo rating ticked up by 24% from the previous episode. It would become one of the best episodes of the season in terms of the live ratings.
Fans wanted to see Jamie react to the truth. They wanted to see him learn about Claire’s ability to travel through history and for Claire to make her choice. After initially wanting to get back to Frank, Claire finally had that chance and chose Jamie. But that wasn’t before seeing Jamie’s heartbreak as he chose to give up Claire so she could be happy.
It remains one of the strongest episodes of the entire series, in my opinion. While it was a change to the books (in the novel, the witch trial takes place outside), it brought the essence of the story. We had a chance to learn Geillis’s secret—get confirmation that she was definitely from the future.
Outlander Season 1, Episode 11 is available to watch on both STARZ and Netflix.
