2. Roger and Young Ian dealing with their joint pain

Outlander Season 5, Episode 8 is a powerful episode. We have two characters that have lost so much and are going through great trauma and heartache. For Roger, it’s about his PTSD. For Young Ian, it’s about loss and grief.

Both look like they could be contemplating suicide. Both are on the verge of just wanting to break away from life and everything life brings. And they both end up helping each other, in a way.

Roger is able to work through his own trauma and see the light at the end of it all. He’s reminded of what he’s fighting for, but I do believe Young Ian helps with some of that. Just having someone there who isn’t trying to mollycoddle him is good. It’s also Young Ian that encourages Roger to speak.

For Young Ian, Roger is the one that’s there to help. Young Ian doesn’t want the help but he needs it. Roger is there to almost be a punching bag when Young Ian lashes out after losing the one thing he can use to kill himself. He accepts being called a hypocrite, but there’s a bond that forms between them as they both agree to not bury their weapons.

1. Roger and Brianna at the end of the episode

At the very end, Roger returns. The first thing he says to her is her name, and the look on her face is beautiful. She’s overjoyed that he’s decided to speak again, excited and happy that he’s clearly choosing to fight through the trauma.

But there’s something more important for me in this scene of Outlander Season 5, Episode 8. It’s all about Roger’s words. He makes it clear that his last words wouldn’t matter. What mattered the most was who the last person he saw was.

He makes it clear that Brianna was his light in the darkness. She brought him back. She’s always brought him back. And he has always brought her back. They are both right for each other and this moment brings us so much hope. After some dark moments in the last two episodes, I’m extremely happy the episode ended on this positive note.
