Sophie Skelton shares what’s so great about Brianna on Outlander
STARZ has done a Take the Lead series focused on some of the strong women in its shows. Sophie Skelton talks Brianna on Outlander.
To celebrate International Women’s Day, STARZ focused on many of the female characters in its shows. Sophie Skelton had a Take the Lead video, where she talked about Brianna’s strong points on Outlander.
It’s easy to call Brianna a brat, but it’s important to put yourself in her situation. She was raised as the daughter of a surgeon and a scholar during the mid-20th century. To her, life was grand. She had a plan, but she soon realized that life wasn’t the way that she thought. Her father wasn’t the man she thought he was, and suddenly, her whole life turned upside down.
This wasn’t just a case of her mom having an affair. Claire had married a man in the 18th century. That would have been difficult for anyone to take in. And then Brianna found herself in the 18th century, fighting against the sexism, the bias, and the danger against women. She’s a modern woman, even for her own time, so it’s not that surprising that she found herself out of water when she went to the past for honorable reasons.
Brianna has certainly had a rough ride. It’s something Sophie Skelton focuses on in the Take the Lead video. Brianna offers that reminder that someone can be vulnerable and strong at the same time. There’s a strength in leaning on other people, but that vulnerability is something Bree needs to accept still.
One thing Skelton believes is that people can learn a lot from this character. Look past the anger and at the real feelings deep down. Look at the lessons that Brianna has learned and the way she’s had to handle everything that has been thrown at her. She’s certainly a strong female character to celebrate on International Women’s Day.
Outlander airs on Sundays on STARZ. You can see more Take the Lead videos on the STARZ YouTube channel.
