2. Giving Beardsley the choice

At the end of the episode, Claire and Jamie know there’s only one thing that can be done. As Jamie says, he would do it to a dog. They need to carry out a mercy killing.

Claire leaves the house, giving Jamie the chance to give Beardsley a choice. Despite all the free will Beardsley took from others, Jamie wouldn’t kill him without making sure this was something Beardsley wanted. Would he want to lose his leg and need to be nursed for the rest of his life or put out of his misery?

It was a big step for Jamie in Outlander Season 5, Episode 3. Some wouldn’t have bothered to give Beardsley a choice. Jamie is an honorable man for this moment.

1. Worrying about his father suffering

In the end, we realize that it’s not honor towards Beardsley but honor towards his father. Jamie admits to Claire that he worries now if Brian Fraser suffered after having his stroke. He’d always thought strokes killed outright, but now learns the horrible truth.

There’s a doubt in Jamie’s head as he wonders if Jenny kept this information from him all these years. Would someone have given Brian a mercy killing if Brian had been left in a similar state to Beardsley?

And then his worry turns to himself. He doesn’t want to be left to suffer like that.
