Fergus picked up a scrap piece of paper from Claire's surgery in Outlander Season 5, Episode 3. Was it really scrap? Was it one of Claire's leaflets?
There are certain things that you can always expect to happen in a TV show, even one based on a book. Something that looks inconsequential will always play a bigger part. And there's something in Outlander Season 5, Episode 3 that certainly stands out.
When Jamie asked Fergus to send a note to the printers, they both needed paper. With a quick glance at some scrap paper from Claire's surgery, it looked innocent enough to write on the back. Naturally, it's not going to be innocent, is it?
Fergus should have probably looked at the writing a little more clearly. He would likely see "Dr. Rawlings Recommends" written at the top. At least, after years of reading books and watching TV shows, this is something that I suspect will have been written on the back of that scrap piece of paper. Whether it was a leaflet Claire decided not to send out or something that she was still working on, it's clear that the paper was more than scrap.
How could this come back to haunt Claire?
When Claire started writing down preventative health care, it was clear that it could come back as a problem. Brianna tried to warn Claire against it, but in the end, she helped create the leaflets. There was no talking Claire out of it.
The notes were only supposed to be distributed out to the women on the Ridge; those close enough to Claire that she could manage some of it. What could end up happening?
Those who have read the book will have an idea. We know that Claire learns that one of her leaflets ends up at the printers, but she doesn't know how. Well, it looks like the writers had added something to offer a sensible and realistic explanation.
What do you think was on that paper Fergus picked up? Is this going to come back to haunt Claire? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
