2. The kilt

It’s something fans of the books had been asking for throughout Outlander Season 4. I think saving it for this moment, to do the call to arms, was actually a really smart move in terms of the TV show. It built up the suspense, wondering when and if he would ever don his kilt again.

The moment added flare. He needs to show that he’s following Tryon’s orders, but he’s doing it in his own way. He’s keeping the Scottish traditions alive, whether Tryon likes that or not.

It’s a strong statement, especially with the burning cross. And it was about time he put that kilt back on!

1. Asking Murtagh to leave

My favorite moment because of the excellence in Sam Heughan’s acting came at the very end of the Outlander Season 5 premiere. Jamie found Murtagh in the woods to have one last conversation. There’s no way around Jamie hunting Murtagh down now, and Jamie isn’t going to risk those close to him.

There are tears in Jamie’s eyes as he wishes Murtagh to get out of dodge. More than that, Jamie wants Murtagh to be as difficult to find as possible. It’s clear that Jamie knows there’s a real danger to Murtagh right now.

But what really got me the most was releasing Murtagh from the oath made decades earlier. We got a glimpse of it in the flashback, of the oath Murtagh made after Ellen’s death. It’s all come full circle now, and it’s time for Murtagh to stop trying to protect Jamie and now just protect himself.
