Outlander Season 5: Will the Regulators struggle to trust Murtagh?

Murtagh is the leader of the Regulators, but he’s also Jamie’s godfather. This conflict of interest could cause trouble in Outlander Season 5.

Jamie isn’t the only person walking between two fires in Outlander Season 5. Murtagh also has that problem, as he wants to fight for a cause he believes in but is also close to the man tasked with hunting him down. It wouldn’t be all that surprising if the Regulators struggle to trust Murtagh.

We know based on the individual promo for Jamie that there is going to be some ill-will between the Regulators and Jamie. The Regulators will view Jamie as the enemy and part of the problem with the rising taxes.

At the same time, they also know that Jamie and Murtagh are related. In fact, Jamie attended a Regulator meeting back in Season 4. He put his own life on the line to save Murtagh’s, managing to send Fergus to do the actual saving. The Regulators will know that Jamie and Murtagh have a deep-rooted history that can cause problems for them moving forward.

Jamie is walking a fine line, but he does it without Governor Tryon knowing about his relationship to Murtagh. Meanwhile, Murtagh is trying to lead the Regulators while having this familial bond with Jamie. It would be natural for the Regulators to question whether Murtagh is on the side of Jamie or on their side; it’s understandable that they could struggle to trust Murtagh.

I don’t think it will be that hard for Murtagh to convince the Regulators that he’s on that side. A few shows of power in particular towns should be enough. Hillsborough is mentioned in “The Fiery Cross,” and it could be the main focus for the earlier episodes to bring the Regulator story to life more than in the books. This would be a way for Murtagh to truly show which side he is on.

I do think there will initially be some questions about the side that Murtagh is on, but they won’t last. It’s not hard for Murtagh to prove his fight is with the Regulators.
