Could Jamie change the future even if he wanted to on Outlander?
In the Outlander Season 5 trailer, it sounds like Jamie wants to change history. If he did, would he even be able to? Previous attempts suggest otherwise.
There’s a moment in the Outlander Season 5 trailer where Brianna warns Jamie what changing the future could mean. It sounds like Jamie wants to attempt to change history again. If he really wanted to, would he even be able to do it?
This wouldn’t be the first time Jamie has thought about changing history. In the second season, he and Claire attempted to prevent the Jacobite rebellion to preserve the Scottish Highlands’ communities and history. When that wasn’t possible, they tried to make it so the Jacobites would win Culloden.
It was soon clear that big things couldn’t change. At one point, Jamie and Claire thought they had changed history by killing Black Jack Randall early, but that wasn’t the case. Even relatively smaller things couldn’t change.
Big things in history can’t and arguably shouldn’t change. Even the bad things have all led us to a society that we have now. Changing even the bad things could arguably lead to far more negative than positive in the future. There’s a huge butterfly effect, something that Brianna points out. If they stop the battle to come, that could mean America doesn’t become the country that it is now. What could that mean for Brianna, Roger, and so many others?
On the other hand, smaller things can change. Saving a few lives here and there may be playing God, but it’s not in a way that has a huge negative impact on the future.
Caitriona Balfe previously talked about Claire and Jamie attempting to change history. It’s certainly not a good idea, and we’ve learned that it isn’t possible after all.
Do you think it’s possible for Jamie to change the course of history? Should he even try? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
