Jamie learns about modern-day methods of contraception and more in The Fiery Cross. Will that be included in Outlander Season 5?
We’re looking at Chapter 18 of “The Fiery Cross,” so if you haven’t read to that point, there will be spoilers. However, there’s no guarantee it will be included in Outlander Season 5.
There’s a lot that happens in “The Fiery Cross.” Trying to guess what will be included in Outlander Season 5 and what won’t is difficult. However, something that I do hope is included is the talk of contraception and hysterectomies.
During Chapter 18 of “The Fiery Cross,” Jamie and Claire discuss avoiding pregnancy. It all starts with Roger having a posey of flowers, which Jamie views as a romantic gesture. And while they sort of are, they’re also a convenience and a show of respect Roger has for Brianna.
It turns out the posey of flowers are actually herbs that can be used as a contraception. Brianna doesn’t want any more children right now, but she doesn’t have the access to birth control that she would in the 20th century. And this isn’t something that Claire can make up for her in her surgery. So, they have to go with some of the older methods.
This is when Jamie learns about contraception and how women can choose when to have children. There is a wonder about why men wouldn’t get a say, but Claire doesn’t really go too deeply into the “her body, her choice” topic. Instead, she keeps the focus on that Brianna has a choice and that Roger respects that choice.
And this is the reason why I hope the show keeps it in. Claire makes a point that Roger is the one that picks the flowers. He is the one that wants to honor a wish of Brianna’s. Even if Roger wants a child that he knows with full certainty is his, he wants to do it on Brianna’s terms. There’s a hell of a lot of respect and love in that one gesture, something that Jamie needs to understand.
Then, of course, there’s the talk of hysterectomies. Claire didn’t have one but she did think about it. In the end, she thought about what Jamie might want, his wish for another child. However, we get to see his love for Claire in this moment. He wouldn’t want another child if it would risk Claire’s life. He only wants Claire.
We get to see how both men love their women. This part of the chapter in “The Fiery Cross” is a chance to see their respect for both women in their lives. And I want to see that play out on screen.
