If you haven’t seen the Outlander Season 5 sneak peek, I will say that this includes major spoilers. Check it out before you read on!
The first four minutes of Outlander Season 5 are out there. It all starts with a flashback to a young Jamie, and you know that you’re in Scotland before you see Lallybroch. The music is a giveaway immediately.
This flashback is important for the setting of the season. Why? Let’s break down that opening.
In the flashback, we get Murtagh walking up the hill from Lallybroch to a young and solemn Jamie. The young lad is silent as Murtagh explains that Ellen is gone, but that he will always be there. We know that Murtagh made a pledge, but this moment shows that Jamie was told about the pledge immediately.
More than that, the flashback shows us that it was Murtagh who broke the news about Ellen. In most cases, the other parent or a doctor is the one to break the news. But for Jamie, it was his godfather. Murtagh shared the news and the pledge in one, and it’s a pledge that Murtagh has stuck to.
So, what makes it so important for Outlander Season 5? We’re looking at what’s to come. After all, we’ve got the Revolutionary War on the horizon and it’s all starting with Jamie’s militia going up against Murtagh and his Regulators. Murtagh and Jamie are on opposite sides, and this is going to be difficult for both of them.
Will Murtagh continue to hold that pledge to have Jamie’s back? Can he when the two are on opposite sites?
The tagline for the season is “Make an Oath.” Who is the one making an oath and what does this have to do with Murtagh’s original oath?
