Outlander’s David Berry recently took to Instagram to share his story of a premalignant mole to raise awareness for skincare and more.

It’s not often that David Berry will open up a lot about his personal life. It happens more in the smaller settings, such as the Meet and Greets at Sasnak City, but he doesn’t tend to go to Instagram to do so. That changed at the end of October after he met a fan at Sasnak City who is undergoing melanoma treatment.

Berry decided to take to Instagram to share his story of his own premalignant mole. It was removed two years ago, and he even shared an image of the scar afterward. The story came with a note that this happened two years ago while bringing up skincare awareness to protect the skin from sun damage.

At the same time, there was an honest message about the stigma that still surrounds certain illnesses, such as skin cancer. There’s the stigma around pale skin and how it looks unhealthy—and yet it could be extremely healthy! Don’t be ashamed of your skin and certainly don’t be ashamed of going through cancer treatments.

Berry is known for practical jokes or for just sharing fun highlights on his social media. It’s especially heartwarming to see him spread the word about skin cancer, focusing on his own experience and wishing all the best to the Sasnak City attendee who shared her own story. It shows he listens and cares about the fans around him, even if he does seem a little shy at first (and you’ll be surprised to hear that he does seem shy in person).
