8. Standing up for his beliefs

I know there are many who dislike that Roger pushed his idea of marriage before sex on Brianna. However, I love a man who stands up for what he believes in. Yes, he’s been with other women before, but he wasn’t a hypocrite for wanting to marry Brianna. He respected her too much to use her in the way he’s used others.

Instead, this moment showed his love for Brianna. And he stuck to those ideals even when Brianna was offering herself.

If you’re going to dislike Roger for pushing his beliefs and wants on Brianna, then you should also dislike that Brianna was pushing her own on Roger. It works both ways.

7. Helping Morag MacKenzie on the boat

On the ship to the Colonies, Roger watched in horror as those with smallpox were thrown overboard. Anyone with any sign of a rash was at risk, and that included Morag MacKenzie’s baby.

Without even knowing who Morag was, Roger offered help. He put his own life at risk for the sake of the baby, hiding them in the cargo to protect them from the overzealous sailors. When he was caught by Stephen Bonnet, he could only hope that luck would be on his side.

This moment showed the goodness in Roger’s heart. It’s a side to him we didn’t get to see up to this point, but he will always try to do what’s right.
