4. Claire foreshadows how Black Jack Randall got into Jamie’s head

Murtagh mentions that Jamie reeks of something, and Claire quickly realizes that it’s lavender. She immediately foreshadows everything of what’s to come in the episode, the reason Black Jack Randall has managed to get into Jamie’s head in just one night.

Suffering from pain, Jamie’s mental state would have already been at breaking point. He thought Claire was gone and he would die the next day. But BJR still needed some way of getting deep inside Jamie’s head, and it was all about the lavender.

It’s clear that Black Jack knew that Claire would use lavender a lot. She’s a healer and she’d know about the medicinal purposes of the herb. It wouldn’t take too long for Claire to figure out what BJR did and in that scene in the cart she foreshadowed that she’d use the lavender to get Jamie to open up.

3. I still have to look for signs that Jamie is alive

When Jamie is on the cot in Wentworth, I still have to look for signs that he’s still alive. I know that he is, but that look in his eyes has no emotion. They’re lifeless and without even a bit of movement in his chest, it looks like he’s dead.

The first time I watched it I remember second-guessing myself. They couldn’t kill Jamie off at the end of the first season, could they? He’s essential in the story!

No, we just got some absolutely excellent acting from him. He was lifeless because his soul had pretty much left him at this point. He was a broken man just waiting for physical death to come for him.
