Why watch A Place to Call Home as an Outlander fan
2. There are the troubled character storylines
David Berry has one of the storylines you’ll want to keep an eye out for. One of his first moments is trying to kill himself by throwing himself overboard on the ship from England to Australia. Naturally, you need to know why and that builds to the reveal that he’s a gay man living in 1953 Australia.
There’s little he can do. But that doesn’t stop him from loving men. He doesn’t have the single infatuation of Jamie Fraser in this, but I’m sure he would if there was the chance.
While Lord John Grey in Outlander has the ability to hide his attraction to men, there’s more attention on James Bligh in A Place to Call Home and his sexual attractions. This is a chance to see how others react to his news — and they’re not all as accepting as the likes of Jamie, Claire, and Brianna have proven in Outlander.
1. There are plenty of strong women
As well as Elizabeth as the meddling matriarch, there are many other strong women in the series. In fact, one of those women is the lead character, Sarah Adams. Then there’s James’ wife, Olivia, and sister, Anna. We get a chance to see women of different backgrounds and with different expectations put against them, with how they all react and attempt to remain happy.
For some, there’s the focus on being happy with a man. Others want happiness in their careers or as individuals or as mothers.
Sarah is a nurse, bringing in a reminder of Claire’s work as a nurse during the Second World War. Anna is the daughter of a landowner, while Olivia is the wife of one. They all have different lives to lead, bringing something different to the story.
