Jamie struggling with Claire’s decisions

Jamie gets home one night to find that Claire isn’t there. When she doesn’t return home until late, he’s naturally angry and upset. While I don’t like seeing them arguing and I don’t agree that she couldn’t work, I love this moment because it shows that Jamie is a man of his time in some cases.

He’s so focused on stopping the rebellion that he can’t see Claire is unhappy with the life they’re living. She needs purpose but he can’t see that her purpose is at the hospital. We see a flaw in his personality, which is important to make him a real man.

This part of the episode is also important because it shows how both can be quite selfish at times. Claire didn’t think about getting a message to Jamie to share she’d be home late, while Jamie just expected Claire to drop everything for him and the rebellion.

I love that the two storylines end up joining together. Claire working at the hospital charity ends up being useful for the rebellion mission.

Meeting Fergus

Finally, it has to be about meeting Fergus. The beginning of the episode foreshadows this moment – although I still don’t understand why Jamie has to describe Sawney to Claire since she’d already seen it because she gave it to him! We get to see Jamie watch this young boy and see as he’s stealing off people.

He doesn’t want to turn Fergus in. In fact, he has a use for this boy and offers him a job. We get to see Fergus’ ability to pick pocket but also his need for family and security. He doesn’t care about the threat of the police but does care about the threat of being exposed to the brothel madame. This is telling for later in the story.

Also, we get to find out his real name, Claudel. For those wondering why Jamie says his full name is Fergus Claudel Fraser at the wedding, this is where the Claudel part comes up.
