4. Ned Gowan coming to Claire’s defense

Ned wasted no time in heading to Cranesmuir to come to Claire’s defense. It wasn’t even something Colum wanted, but Ned knew that he couldn’t leave Claire to go through a witch trial alone.

Of course, he would have to defend Geillis at the same time, but this was all about Claire. He made that very clear by the end. There was no way that he could save Geillis. People had believed her to be a witch long before Claire arrived. His only hope was to save Claire.

He didn’t do this purely out of the goodness of his heart. He liked Claire and I don’t think he ever believed that she was a witch. I think he just believed her to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. With the among she’d helped him with his asthma, he knew he owed her and wanted to keep her safe.

3. Ned managing to remain respectful of everyone there

Throughout the witch trials, it would have been easy for Ned to undermine those accusing people. However, this would have alienated him and would have made it even harder to make it look like Claire and Geillis were innocent.

Instead, Ned managed to remain respectful throughout. He showed sympathy and understood why people would believe something. The moment that stands out the most for me is when the mother of the deceased baby shared her tale. He understood her need to believe in faeries and changelings. While Claire rolled her eyes at the idea, Ned remained calm and kind.

He was able to offer a different tale. He managed to find a way to help this mother accept that her baby was alive and well with the faeries. I loved him in this moment of Outlander Season 1, Episode 11.
