International Women’s Day 2019: 5 women in Outlander to gain inspiration from
3. Brianna Randall Fraser
Who she was: Brianna Randall Fraser is the daughter of Claire and Jamie (and raised by Frank). She really needs no introduction, but I shall give it anyway.
Raised in the 20th century, it’s only after Frank’s death that she learns out her father isn’t her biological father. Her birth father is an 18th-century Highlander, a Jacobite traitor who fought at the Battle of Culloden. If learning that her father wasn’t her biological one wasn’t enough, I’m sure the knowledge of him being 200 years in the past threw her over the edge.
After realizing that her mother was telling the truth about the stones, Brianna realized that it was time to find out more about who her father is after finding out he’s still alive in the past. Initially, she allows her mother to go back to the past alone but later follows in hope of saving them from a house fire.
That certainly puts Brianna through the worst ordeal of her life. In a world where she doesn’t have the same freedoms as she did in the 20th century, she is raped and almost forced into a marriage. Fortunately, the love of her life, Roger Wakefield MacKenzie, returns to her after his own ordeal.
Take inspiration from her because: Brianna is one of the mentally strongest characters you’ll find in the Outlander books and show. She manages to take everything that happened to her and move forward with her life. Despite the uncertainty of Roger never coming back, she managed to find ways to hold onto hope.
She was also willing to put herself at risk by going to the past. After learning her parents were going to die in a fire, she made sure she sacrificed her happiness in the future to do what she could to stop them. Her strength of character is certainly something to take from her for inspriation this International Women’s Day.
