One of the big disappointments for many is that Jamie didn’t get to hold the baby in the Outlander Season 4 finale. It turns out there’s a very good reason for it not happening.

There were a few disappointments in the Outlander Season 4 finale for many. I admit that I didn’t find them all that disappointing but I respect that fans who have waited for these books to be transformed for decades did. One of the biggest disappointments for many was that Jamie didn’t hold his grandson.

After years of not being able to be a father to his own children, fans were ready to see him swoon over his grandson. However, it didn’t happen. Claire and Jocasta both got the opportunity but not Jamie. It turns out it wasn’t a flaw in the writing but an actor choice — the youngest actor on set.

During the official Outlander podcast, the EPs explained that the baby just didn’t like Sam Heughan. Every time the baby was passed to him, there were tears (and no, not from Sam!). There was no possible way of filming scenes with Jamie holding his grandson because of this.

Why not get another baby to play the role? It would have taken far too much time to find another baby actor. This would have been towards the end of filming and the EPs needed to get the series into post-production. It would have been cheaper and easier to work around the baby’s dislike for Sam.

That can change for Outlander Season 5. Now there’s time to cast another child for the role, which means we should see more of Jamie being a grandfather moving forward. Those moments you missed will likely come in the next season.
