1. Admitting being unable to keep her promise

I know there’s some confusion over this promise. Honestly, I started to question it a little. Claire shared that she couldn’t keep the promise she and Jamie made years ago. That promise was secrets but no lies.

Well, wasn’t Claire’s secret with Brianna just a secret? Really, it was Jamie who lied, as he told Claire that he’d hit a tree to cause the damage to his hand. Claire just hasn’t said anything to Jamie about the ring and Bonnet.

However, I think this wasn’t just about her view that she’d lied to her husband. This was about how their relationship was going to have to change moving forward. And in this moment, she was a mother as well as a wife.

Mothers will keep secrets for their daughters. Some will even tell lies. They’ll be a confidante and a shoulder to lean on. Throughout this scene, she was making it clear that her position with Brianna returning had changed. There are two people she loves in her heart equally and sometimes one will have to come before the other.
