2. Bonding with Morag MacKenzie

During the journey, we get to see Roger bond with Morag. It’s mostly over the baby, who is crying due to teething and Roger clearly wants to help but has no idea how to do that. This just shows the start of the man that he could become.

Of course, it leads to a bigger moment, one that becomes my number one choice. However, one thing I love is that he bonds long before he knows who Morag MacKenzie even is. And while he knows the name after, it doesn’t seem clear that he realizes there’s a direct link to this family. After all, there are plenty of MacKenzies out there!

1. Putting his own life on the line

Roger knows that finding Morag and the baby is important. If anyone else finds them, they’ll immediately think the rash is smallpox even though it’s definitely not. However, hiding them is also dangerous.

When Stephen Bonnet does find them, it’s clear that Bonnet knew that the rash wouldn’t be smallpox, otherwise he would have thrown the baby overboard anyway. After all, Bonnet gave the baby alcohol to numb the gums, making it clear that he knew what it was.

That’s why it’s not overly surprising that Bonnet flipped only for Roger’s life. And this is my favorite moment. It’s a 50/50 chance and Roger puts his life on the line for mother and baby. He doesn’t even try to fight this and just hopes that he’ll get through unscathed.
