4. Lord John Grey returns

We get a beautiful reunion between Lord John Grey and Jamie. John decides to see Jamie on his own first, unsure how Jamie and Willie will take to each other. It’s a beautiful reunion, with both happy to see each other.

I love that we get to hear of letters that Jamie has sent John. This could have been something overlooked, leaving us guessing about how Lord John Grey knew about Fraser’s Ridge. Instead, we get this continued relationship growing between the two.

Plus, Lord John is somewhat sensitive to Jamie about Willie. He doesn’t want to get Jamie’s hopes up about his son, although it’s clear there are personal reasons for being at Fraser’s Ridge.

3. John’s honesty with Claire

I adored the fact that John was so open and honest with Claire. For a man of his time, it was slightly out of character. At the same time, it was so in character.

When John and Jamie talked at Ardsmuir, John opened up about his love for a soldier who had died on the battlefield. We never got to see the flashback that had been filmed, but this was included as a deleted scene. The two barely knew each other but John was so open and honest.

This continued with Claire. I can understand why he’d be so honest, too. He was running a fever and people say things they wouldn’t usually want to share when running fevers. They’re not always thinking straight. But it also shows the respect he has for Claire, as well as trust. Since Jamie could be so honest with Claire, he shows that he believes he can be, too.

In return, Claire is open and honest to John. This isn’t all one-sided, which makes it so perfect for the episode.
