4. It’s rich in British history

Really, I should say it’s rich in history overall. This is a story set pre-1066. In a world where England is divided into multiple kingdoms, it tells the story of King Alfred the Great and his wish to combine all into one.

While there are certainly fictional elements to the tale, there are some moments of real history pulled in. Bernard Cornwell has done his research, just like Diana Gabaldon. However, the story is a story for entertainment purposes, at the end of the day.

You’ll still learn more about some of the biggest players in Viking and British history. As mentioned, Alfred the Great is just one of the main players. His son Edward has become a focal point and then there’s Cnut in the most recent season.

There are stories of great battles, of warring kingdoms, and the struggles to keep order in a medieval world. If you enjoy Outlander for the history of the world, this is going to draw you into The Last Kingdom. Just don’t expect too much in the way of real history and enjoy it for the fictional tales.
