1. There was a good mixture of humor and heartbreak

While books get away with having a lull and focusing on the minute details, TV shows don’t get away with that. People may want to get the same detail they would in the book, but to fit a book that takes 40+ hours into a 13-hour season makes it impossible to add all the details.

Each episode of a show needs to have it’s own sort of drama. At the same time, it needs to have some humor and some sort of storyline and character development.

The premiere didn’t really have that. While it had some humor and the drama at the very end, a lot of the focus was on where the characters were going next. Yes, this pushed the story along, but some of the connection between Claire and Jamie was lost. I don’t like saying this because I love the other characters, but there were too many people to focus on at once and it took the attention away from the overall storyline.

Do No Harm” didn’t suffer from that problem as much. The focus was on Claire and Jamie learning more about slaves, plantation owning, and the new world they’re in. That brought in some other characters, but the attention wasn’t drawn too much from the Frasers.

There was a better balance, with the right level of humor for the drama at various points throughout.
