5 best moments from Outlander Season 4, Episode 2
2. Jocasta greeting Jamie and the family
Straight after the arrival, we got to see Jocasta greet Jamie and the others. It would have been easy to make Jocasta standoffish, but the writers stuck to this kind-hearted but strict woman. She loved her family and it was beautiful to see the overwhelm of this reunion.
Jocasta clearly missed her family, especially her sister. And then there’s Jamie who sees so much of his mother in his aunt, bringing back some fond and emotional memories.
However, what I adored was the way the writing of Jocasta’s sight was handled. It wasn’t clear at first that Jocasta had sight problems. There were hints, like her recalling his red hair, but nothing to make a note that she couldn’t actually see. It was when Young Ian gave her the flowers that this was made clear.
She also pointed out that she could hear when someone was lying. We all knew this was going to be foreshadowing for when she and Claire would talk in private.
1. Easing Rufus’ passing
In the end, there was no way to save Rufus. Sure, Claire and Jamie could have tried to find a way to escape with him but it would have been too dangerous. That would have also left Jocasta with far too many problems.
The only option was to ease Rufus’ passing and save his soul. Claire was beautifully compassionate, bringing out that part of her she’d needed during World War II.
Then there was Jamie, who knew that killing someone, even mercifully, was wrong. He prayed for forgiveness and for God to take Rufus’ soul. This led to another fan favorite moment of Claire and Jamie watching in anger and disgust as Rufus was hanged.
