2. He’s loyal to his family

One thing the Scots did right was loyalty. They were always loyal to their clans and to their family, which is something Young Ian brings over to the Colonies. And Jamie is the perfect mentor for that loyalty considering his connection to Claire, Jenny, and even the MacKenzies when on their land.

We’ll get to see more of that loyalty come through in the fourth season. This is going to be the chance to see how far that loyalty goes, especially for the people who sailed to save him from the Bakra.

3. He’ll add a layer of emotion and reality

It would be easy to gloss over the things that happened to Young Ian at the end of the third season. However, John Bell has some dark and emotional scenes, especially in the first season. For the most part, Ian is going to try to play it happy and care-free, but there’s one moment that has him flashing back to his time in Jamaica.

While we need the humor, we also need some character development. Young Ian gives us someone new to learn more about and see grow and that’s going to be exciting. Plus, there is more of Jamie’s past that gets the chance to come out, so we’ll see more growth between uncle and nephew’s relationship.
