2. Discussing the marriage contract

At the very end of the episode, Claire reads over the marriage contract. She has no choice but to marry someone and that someone is Jamie. Before she signs it, she wants to make sure Jamie is happy with it first. Of course, there’s likely part of a stalling technique at play here, but she knows her only option right now is marriage.

We also get to see Jamie’s guard drop a little more. He shares that he’s not a prospect for marriage but also makes it extremely clear that he’s a virgin. It’s clear right at this moment that he’s an honorable man and has learned a lot from his father.

1. Seeing Black Jack Randall’s real personality

My favorite part of the whole of Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 is the scene between Black Jack Randall and Claire. As I mentioned in my thoughts on the episode, up to this point we were happy to believe Jamie’s side of the story. We took him at face value without knowing much about Randall.

In this moment, we learned the full truth. We figured out that he was a horrible and sadistic man and Jamie likely was telling the full truth about his tale. This scene opened us to Randall’s real thoughts and nightmare tendencies, showing us his heart was as black as night.

However, we also saw that he was smart, cunning, and able to get away with a hell of a lot. This would set us up for the things to come in the future.
