Outlander Season 1, Episode 6: Top 5 thoughts while rewatching The Garrison Commander
2. Claire really should learn to keep her mouth shut
I’ve thought it before and I will continue to think it. Sometimes Claire is just too outspoken. There’s standing up for what she believes is right and then there’s getting herself in trouble; making her look guilty of something like treason.
Up until this point, she’s struggled with her 20th century opinions in the 18th century world. However, Outlander Season 1, Episode 6 could have seen her in a hell of a lot more trouble.
This happens at the dinner table. She just can’t help herself standing up for the Scots. As much as she’s right, it certainly wouldn’t make a difference. Men of the time wouldn’t listen to a woman’s point of view.
Claire does eventually try to backtrack, but by that point it comes across as dismissive. She skirts around questions that she hasn’t figured out an answer for ahead of time.
Shouldn’t she have thought of what she’d say her maiden name is assuming she’d be questioned about it in the future? She’s managed to come up with the story of the “affair of the heart” after all. Surely, she’d met someone she could have used as a surname for her maiden name.
Really, a lot of the trouble with Randall could have possibly been avoided had she just kept her mouth shut in the first place. Her sympathy for the Scots certainly made him realize she knew something.
Choose your battles wisely, Claire!
