3. Claire has clearly grown on Dougal

In the end, Dougal does help to protect Claire, but it’s clear in the scene with Thomas that deep down he likes claire. He just doesn’t want to admit it aloud. What makes me think that?

Well, when Thomas mentions that Claire has a way of ordering men around, Dougal smirks with a proud smile. He knows all too well what Claire is capable of and he isn’t ashamed to show that in his smirk.

What I’m most intrigued about is the reason for the smirk. Sure, Claire has grown on Dougal but was he really proud to have Claire in his life or just for her to put everyone in their place?

Later on, we also see him rush to her side after she leaves to help the soldier who needs his arm amputated. Dougal is extremely worried about Claire being in a room with Black Jack Randall.

This is more than just concern for a prisoner of his in party or the fact that she knows about the Jacobite money. He clearly wants to keep her safe. That’s also the reason he goes running into the room to safe Claire at the very end. It’s more than just concern she’ll talk.
