2. Seeing Jamie’s defenses go up
During the nights in Outlander Season 1, Episode 5, Dougal would rally the men to gain money for the Jacobite cause. While there are elements of this I dislike or find odd, there is a standout moment: Jamie.
Dougal uses Jamie’s back as a way to stir the men. This is something Jamie hates, but he has no say in the matter. When he does try to fight back, Dougal makes it clear that this has to continue. Jamie’s defenses go up immediately.
The first time Dougal rips Jamie’s shirt is my favorite. There’s a sense that something is going to happen, but it’s not until Dougal actually rips the shirt that you see the full defenses go up. Jamie’s back goes completely tense. You don’t need to see the fire in his eyes or the stony look to know that he’s angry and on edge.
1. The men standing up for Claire
Again, this is part of the episode that I find strange and don’t like Claire’s actions throughout it, but the scene is a good one to show the MacKenzie men for their goodness. As the men in the tavern make lewd comments about Claire, you can see they’re angry at them. These men are saying something that the MacKenzie men are unwilling to accept.
However, it’s Murtagh’s comment that is the best and really shows why this scene is so excellent. While the MacKenzie men are allowed to rib Claire, nobody else is. These men are almost like big brothers. There’s certainly a familial love/hate relationship between them; something Claire has never noticed before.
This helps to ease the tension and makes me like the characters again. Of course, I never stopped likely Murtagh, which may be why I’m especially glad that he had the line.
