9. The Low Down

Character: John

Air date:  Jan. 26, 2001

About the character: John is one of lead protagonist Frank’s friends and roommates. While Frank has a crisis of identity and where his life is heading, John takes the more laid-back approach and is clearly not that interested in the whole thing.

While he’s one of the main characters in the movie, he doesn’t have the biggest role. After all, the focus isn’t on him.

Why it deserves a spot: The Low Down was one of Tobias Menzies’ first-ever roles. You can certainly see that when you watch the trailer for it (included above for you). There are certain personal traits he brings into the role, but for the most part, this is nothing like any other character you’ve seen him as.

There are times you’ll roll your eyes at him, hate his guts, and love him to pieces. He’s one of the stereotypical lads in a late 90s/early 00s British movie. The whole thing reminds me of Trainspotting and others from the time period in terms of filming.

Because the role isn’t the biggest and it was one of his earliest, it doesn’t belong much higher. However, it did help kick-start his career and features his guitar-playing skills.
