1. Rome

Character: Marcus Junius Brutus

Air date: (Beginning) Aug. 28, 2005

About the character: Outside of Outlander, his role of Marcus Junius Brutus in Rome may be Tobias Menzies’ most infamous role. It’s certainly one of the biggest reasons he’s known internationally. Marcus finds himself torn between the love of the man who is like a father and what he believes to be the right thing.

That sets up some catastrophic moments and dramatic storylines for the character throughout the series. However, his decisions make him one of the most likeable characters in the whole series.

Why it deserves a spot: There’s duty, honor and love in Rome and a lot of that comes from Tobias Menzies’ performance. This was the role I first ever saw the actor in and it has stuck with me ever since.

He’s kind and loving, but he can also be hardened by war. When he has to choose between loyalty and doing what’s right, he finds it hard but makes a decision we can respect. Yet his decisions don’t come without consequences and some slight changes to his personality. When you need to see Menzies in a positive role that you can like for the most part (without feeling guilty), watch Rome.
