4. Colum’s mind games
At the feast, we all remember Claire slipping up in assuming Hamish was Dougal’s son. Yes, she made the right assumption but it was clearly something not to mention at all. And it certainly made everyone around her wary and suspicious–and a little angry and embarrassed.
However, it was clear that this was a part of Colum’s mind games. As Claire mentions, it was the oldest trick in the book for someone to let their guard down. Claire had fallen for it.
Yet, it wasn’t just this. Colum asked a hell of a lot of questions for Claire to think about on the spot. I always thought she’d have sorted this story out when she had a chance to relax in the room. Surely she would have known some of them were coming, especially the ones about where she came from in France.
What this scene really gave us was what to expect from Colum. He may not have been physically strong, but he definitely was mentally. This was a man who used his brain because that was all he could.
W e know from the books and later in the series that Dougal is the war chief because he can physically do that work. However, Colum is still the laird and he takes that position seriously.
