5 best moments from the Outlander series premiere
3. The use of Gàidhlig in the background
I didn’t notice this the first time I watched the Outlander series premiere, but I picked up on it the second time. To be honest, the first time I ever watched Outlander, I thought I was missing subtitles and had to go back to check!
The use of Gàidhlig is realistic but it’s more than just having conversations between each other when Claire is in earshot. Those moments are certainly awesome but I love hearing the conversations in the background.
Not only do we get this language to set the scene, but we also get the bond between the clan members. It’s clear that they know each other and that they have each other’s backs. You can also see which ones are friendlier with each other and those who are on the outside.
We also get a sense of their thoughts about Claire. You didn’t need to understand what they were saying at all. Murtagh had a little respect but annoyance, while Jamie was grateful for her help. Dougal was suspicious but did have some respect for her knowledge, while the others…well…that doesn’t need explaining right?
The Gàidhlig just helped to add the time period and confirmed Claire really had gone back in time.
