#4: The History

The books and TV show are packed full of historical accuracy. I wasn’t a fan of history in school because it was dry and boring in a way that made me want to rip my eyeballs out of my head.

As a teenager and adult, though, I learned about a little thing called Historical Romance or Historical Fiction- wherein authors write about actual events using fictional characters, or sometimes actual people with fictional events. Either way, there must be some sort of historical element that is true, and in Outlander’s case, there are MANY OF HUNDREDS of historical elements. So many, in fact, I can’t even begin to name them all and I probably don’t even realize some of them because I was sleeping during History for most of my public education.

Some historical figures include the Duke of Sandringham, the English invasion of Scotland, the Clan skirmishes, and witchcraft trials and burnings. The most famous piece of history in Outlander, though, is the Battle of Culloden and the attempt by the Bonnie Prince Charlie to take back the English throne. It is fascinating, and heartbreaking, and makes you realize just how thankful we should be for our circumstances in the here and now.
