Outlander- Starz

There are eight giant door-stoppers in the Outlander book series, and every single one of them is a portal into another universe. If you’ve seen the first season of the Starz adaptation of Outlander, you pretty much read the first book. Of course you lose some of the smaller nuances and [theatrically] unimportant story lines, but for the most part what you see is what happened in Diana Gabaldon’s first novel, which was published in 1991.

Yes, they are big, but what Diana Gabaldon offers readers is not just a lot of words. They are worlds and people that I have come to love and care about as if they were my best friends. The stories, even after reading through all the books multiple times, offer lessons to me each time I read them. I laugh and cry and smile and sob at the same parts each and every time, despite the fact that I know what’s coming. The writing loses you, and that’s the best possible thing that can happen to a reader when they pick up a book.

And there are eight of them. I won’t start in on the spin-off novels featuring Lord John Grey. That’s a whole other article. 🙂
