Outlander Season 7 has had a nuckelavee storyline since Roger and Bree moved to Lallybroch. Roger finally came face to face with this mysterious “creature,” only to realize he recognized him. Who was the man hiding in the woods?

If you felt like you should have known who the man in the woods at Lallybroch was, that’s because technically, you’ve seen him before. Roger has seen him before. However, he wore a slightly different face when we saw him last.

Think back to Outlander Season 5. Roger comes across Morag Gunn MacKenzie again. He’s shocked to see her, and he knows that she is a distant ancestor of his. He ends up giving her a kiss on the cheek, and that’s when her husband shows up. Oh yes, William Buccleigh MacKenzie, better known as Buck MacKenzie, shows up. It’s none other than Graham McTavish playing the character.

Well, McTavish isn’t playing Buck in Season 7. Instead, Diarmaid Murtagh is playing the role, and that’s who we saw in the woods at Lallybroch.

Who is Buck MacKenzie in Outlander?

Wait, didn’t we see Buck in the 18th century? He was at the Battle of Alamance, right? How is he in the 20th century?

This is where we need to really understand who Buck is. He’s the illegitimate son of Geillis Duncan and Dougal MacKenzie. Geillis is a time traveler, and that means the gene passed onto Buck. Buck is an ancestor of Roger, and the time travel gene passes down this line. So, Buck can travel, and that’s exactly what has happened.

We’ll get to understand why he’s traveled in Scotland very soon. There is a reason why he’s not in America—and it’s not because he stowed away on a boat. It looks like he hasn’t been in the 20th century for long based on his clothing.

It’s no wonder Roger punched Buck immediately, though. Not only has Buck been scaring Roger’s children, but Buck was the reason Roger was hanged after Alamance. There’s a lot of hatred there.
