We get to see where Jemmy currently is in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 96
It’s time to find out what Rob Cameron actually did to Jem in Outlander Book 7, Chapter 96. The best thing is this chapter is all from Jemmy’s point of view.
We get to see what Jem is seeing around him, which isn’t a lot at first. He’s somewhere dark and cold, and he figures out that it’s much colder than when he would wait for dear with Jamie when he was in the past.
There are a few things that I adore about this chapter, and the biggest is probably seeing that connection between Jem and Mandy. We’ve already seen some of it in the past. It’s clear the two are connected in ways much bigger than normal siblings. Mandy knew that Rob had taken Jem to the stones before anyone even knew Jem was missing.
Well, in this chapter, we see that Jem shares the ability. He can sense that Mandy is safe, and I think this foreshadows a lot for the two of them in the story. I’ll get to that in the foreshadowing section of the post.
I really hope that this chapter is used in Outlander Season 7. I’ll get to why I hope for that in the adaptation section.
Let’s dive into An Echo in the Bone Chapter 96.

Just the Outlander chapter
This chapter is a short one. We get everything from Jem’s point of view, and we learn that he is somewhere dark and cold. He hasn’t gone back in time, though. Rob did take Jem to the stones, and Jem was disappearing through them. Rob pulled him back, and now we find out that Jem is in the same tunnels that Bree was back when Rob and the others played a prank on her.
The tunnels aren’t just cold and dark. They hurt Jem, and we know from Bree that there is a portal somewhere in there. What would happen if Jem went through that? Let’s not think about that, right?
At one point, Jem senses for Mandy. There’s a small light in his hand, which is supposed to be connected to his sister. Jem realizes that is sister is safe. Rob hasn’t gone back for her. He wants to know more about time travel, and Jem refuses to tell him. Would that mean Rob will go for Mandy to get answers?
Jem stays very calm in this moment, and I love seeing him. He has Bree’s composure when it comes to a sticky situation. He realizes that there’s a train somewhere in the tunnel, and he feels for it. Seeing how Bree managed it, he’s able to get the train going. As Jem gets the train moving away from the big doors that are locked, he thinks about Mandy. Will she be able to tell their parents where he is?
Something else that I take away from this is how Jem is so much like his mother. And we know Bree is very much like Jamie. It’s no wonder Jem thought of his Jamie in this chapter.

Foreshadowing in the Outlander chapter
This chapter certainly foreshadows more for Jem and Mandy. The two are connected, and they have abilities that others don’t. This could be due to both their parents being time travelers instead of just one parent being one.
I do think there’s some foreshadowing of Mandy being the one to keep the MacKenzies together when they go through the stones. We learn in Go Tell the Bees That I Am Gone that Mandy is the one who gives them all something to focus on to keep them together, and I think this chapter makes it clear that Mandy and Jem have some big abilities.
It’s also clear that Bree and Mandy are still in trouble. We know that Rob Cameron has gone to see Bree and has her in his clutches. Will Rob get Mandy and try to go through the stones with her?
Adapting An Echo in the Bone chapter
I want to see this chapter used in Outlander Season 7, but I’m in two minds over whether it will happen. I want to see Jem being resourceful and calm, and I want to see this connection between him and Mandy play out on screen. However, this scene could be rather scary for children to film, so the show could skip over it. I hope they don’t!
